A traditional tiled Japanese roof is shown from the side, with the tile layers swooping down in a steep curve, ending with cast reliefs of traditional heraldic symbols, kamon, associated with the imperial family. Four tile end caps, or gatō, have the three-part 'tomoe' symbol surrounded by a circle of dots. A single cast relief at the end of a primary tile cap featured in the center of the photo is a chrysanthemum in full bloom with three stylized chrysanthemum 'kiku' kamon, the Imperial Seal of Japan, in a wide triangular pattern above it. The roof tiles have a pronounced slate blue color and the wooden support beams are barely visible in the shadows beneath the tiles.
